A day of giving in Nashville with The Big Payback
Tennessee being The Volunteer State, our residents tend to do a lot of giving and doing throughout the year. But if you’re looking for an opportunity for a spring expression of generosity, we’d encourage you to explore the Big Payback.
The annual event, organized by The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, is a daylong online giving endeavor, meant to inspire and accommodate philanthropy across Middle Tennessee’s 40 Counties. This year, it’s set for Wednesday, May 3.
How The Big Payback works:
If you have a heart for charitable works, head to TheBigPayback.org any time on May 3. There, you can choose from nonprofits that span just about every area and cause imaginable, from child advocacy and wildlife rehabilitation to hunger, homelessness, mental health, the arts and on and on. (Like to get a quick scan of just how many benefit from this event? Take a look at this list of 2017 participants, organized by county.)
The site works more or less like any online shopping experience you’ve had — choose nonprofits you support, add them to your cart, set the amount you’d like to give and check out.
The minimum donation amount is $10, and there’s no maximum. Since these are all non-profit organizations, every penny you donate is tax deductible, and after you check out, you’ll get a receipt to keep for next year’s Tax Day. Couldn’t be easier to do a lot of good.
Let’s celebrate
The annual event has been hugely successful, directing thousands of Middle Tennesseans to donate millions of dollars to worthy causes. In 2016 alone, 11,270 generous folks helped raise over $2.6 million for participating organizations.
An undertaking this laudable warrants a celebration, both to encourage locals to take part and celebrate the good being done. So here’s one on the calendar: On May 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Big Payback organizers will join with the Nashville Predators Foundation for a party on the Bridgestone Arena plaza downtown.
The party’s free and open to everyone, and there’ll be live music, food trucks, contests and other fun, plus nonprofit reps onsite to accept donations in person.
