Explore independent bookstores in Nashville
April is a celebratory month for lovers of independent businesses.
On April 22, we had Record Store Day, an annual spotlight on indie record stores filled with parties, shows and special releases.
On the last Saturday in April (April 29 this year), we’ll move to Independent Bookstore Day, a similarly minded celebration at shops all across the country.
In both cases, Nashvillians are particularly lucky — our city is filled with world-class representations of both, each with a vibrant culture and devoted fanbase all its own.
Saturday’s event seemed like a good reason to point out some of Nashville’s excellent indie book shops, spread all around town. A few have some Independent Bookstore Day 2017 events planned, but all are open, if you’re in the mood for new reading material.
Parnassus Books
3900 Hillsboro Pike Suite 14, Green Hills
Stocks: a broad span, from non-fiction to children’s books, plus a particularly extensive local author section (which makes sense, since the shop is co-owned by bestselling Nashville author Ann Patchett). Their literary events calendar is top-notch too.
For Independent Bookstore Day: open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with early storytime for kids, poetry workshopping, exclusive merch and collector’s items and lots more. Details here.
Her Bookshop
1006 Fatherland St., #103A, East Nashville
Stocks: a curated collection, from classic literature to pop culture, with a particular focus on well-designed books. (It’s the shop pictured up top, from the Her Bookshop Facebook page.)
For Independent Bookstore Day: The shop will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with visiting authors, featured books, giveaways, a raffle and more. Details here.
Howlin’ Books
1702 8th Ave. S., Wedgewood-Houston
Stocks: new and used books and magazines, with a specialization in music, arts, pop culture, modern literature, poetry and children’s book. It’s been extra busy around there this month since they share a space with Grimey’s Too, the outgrowth of one of Nashville’s best-loved indie music shops, Grimey’s New & Preloved Music.
For Independent Bookstore Day: We didn’t see any special event plans, but they’re open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Atomic Nashville
1603 Riverside Dr., East Nashville
Stocks: a “quirky” book selection “with a decidedly local slant,” plus gifts, toys and local music and art.
For Independent Bookstore Day: We didn’t see any special event plans, but they’re open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and have lots of books/music/more to browse.
Fairytales Bookstore and More
114 S 11th St., East Nashville
Stocks: all the coolest books, toys, games and other educational stuff for the kids in your life.
For Independent Bookstore Day: We didn’t see any special plans, but they’ll be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
East Side Story
1108 Woodland St., Unit B, East Nashville
Stocks: the work of Nashville/local authors, from fiction to poetry to children’s lit. Their regular East Side Storytellin’ events mix local writing with local music for a particularly great only-in-Nashville experience.
For Independent Bookstore Day: We didn’t see any special plans, but they’ll be open Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Rhino Booksellers
4918 Charlotte Ave., Sylvan Park
4006 Granny White Pike, Green Hills
Stocks: “gently used books, collectible firsts & vintage vinyl records.”
For Independent Bookstore Day: We didn’t see any special plans, but Sylvan Park will be open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Green Hills 10 to 5.
Landmark Booksellers
114 East Main St., Franklin
Stocks: Lots of rare books and first editions, plus maps, prints and more, with a particular leaning toward Tennessee/Southern literature, history and culture.
For Independent Bookstore Day: We didn’t see any special plans, but they’ll be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Hope this list helps you make some fun local reading plans for Saturday, or any other days.
