Where to find less conventional Easter candy in Nashville
Since this weekend is Easter, we’ll be stocking up on basket stuff this week for the kids in our lives… and some of the grown-ups.
Reese’s peanut butter eggs and Hershey’s chocolate bunnies are fine and all. But we like to shop local, and especially for the adults, shoot for stuff that’s a little more interesting.
If you’re of a similar mind, here are our suggestions for less conventional Easter candy, all made/available in Nashville:
Olive and Sinclair
1628 Fatherland St.
Nashville, TN 37206
Give more than the same-old bunny: For the Easter season, Nashville bean-to-bar chocolatiers Olive & Sinclair make particularly cute dark-chocolate bunnies, hand-painted in pastel Easter colors. If you go by their East Nashville factory, you can pick your favorite color; otherwise, order online ($12.99 each) and get an Easter surprise.
Bang Candy Company
1300 Clinton St. Suite 127
Nashville, TN 37203
Might be controversial, but: Skip the Peeps and get something marshmallow-y that actually tastes good. Nashville candy-makers Bang Candy Company’s specialty is artisan marshmallows — for $5, you can grab a small box with four outside-the-basket flavors like chocolate chili and maple bacon. If you get a chance to stop by their shop in Marathon Village, you can grab some of their latest creations, only available there: rainbow bark, in full Easter colors. (It’s explosive in flavor too, since there are Pop Rocks hiding inside).
Goo Goo Cluster
116 3rd Ave. S.
Nashville, TN 37201
Especially for Nashville, a Goo Goo Cluster in the Easter basket might seem super conventional. But one of the coolest things about the Goo Goo folks: They’re always developing new premium candies that are a total surprise, even if you’re a longtime Cluster fan. Like this latest Carrot Cake Premium Goo Goo, of which the Easter Bunny would certainly approve. It’s made by hand in their downtown Nashville shop and dessert bar, with carrot cake cookies, ginger nougat and coconut rum ganache. (Might be best for your grown-up basket-getters.)
Tempered Café & Chocolate
1201 5th Ave N
Nashville, TN 37208
Nothing says spring and the season of rebirth quite like flowers. And in the right hands, roses can be as delicious as they are beautiful. We trust the hands over at Tempered in Germantown — their house-made truffles and chocolates are crazy good, and these rose dark chocolate truffles they’ve been making this spring are definitely on our list. They steep cream in dried rose petals to get the delicate flavor, then top them with more petals to make them extra pretty.
Nashville Chocolate & Nut Co.
6004 Charlotte Pike
Nashville, TN 37209
It being Nashville and all, maybe skip the bunny altogether and go for a chocolate guitar. Nashville Chocolate & Nut Co. makes acoustics and electrics in various sizes, and the signature ones are extra colorful, handmade and one-of-a-kind. You can drop into their Belle Meade shop to get one, or order online.
Stumbled on these on Instagram recently, and can hardly believe they’re edible. But yes, Nashville baker Leeuw Bake Shop is creating cakes and cupcakes that look so much like potted succulents I’d probably be afraid to eat them. (Still would, though.) For Easter in particular, they’re making these Mini-cakes that can be picked up at Gift Horse in East Nashville (1006 Fatherland St., Suite 301). Or, if you’d rather something smaller/equally beautiful that can be placed in a basket, you can order a dozen succulent cupcakes ($36) and have them delivered for free.
Hope some of these suggestions end up in your Easter baskets and make the weekend more delicious, and more Nashville-specific.
