Finding the modern farmhouse look in Nashville
Not quite halfway through the year, I’m not sure I’m ready to cast my vote on the top home-design trend of 2017. But according to a survey I just read about on Apartment Therapy, it’s settled: “Modern Farmhouse” wins.
Whether or not it turns out to be the defining trend of the year, our team definitely sees the popularity of the modern farmhouse look play out here in the Nashville real estate world. Pretty regularly this year — and definitely last year too — Nashville home buyers ask us to help them find properties that have the details Apartment Therapy outlined as “Modern Farmhouse 101”:
— high contrast color palettes, especially black and white
— warm (often reclaimed) wood elements mixed with clean, modern lines
— industrial or raw components, like mixed metals or rugged pipes
— an old/new blend, with vintage and modern pieces
— shiplap
The new construction in Green Hills pictured above is a decent representation of the style, with its mixed metals, blend of rugged textures and sleek finishes, rustic-look lighting, ample plantlife and the occasional antler.
Is this where your tastes are leaning in 2017? Thinking about bringing more of this aesthetic into your Nashville home? Here are a few local places we’d encourage you to check out, as you seek out modern-farmhouse style.
Southern Lights Electric
A lot of Southern Lights Electric’s designs lean toward mid-century modern, but the Nashville lighting company also offers cool and simple industrial options, like this Elise-Steel swing arm wall lamp. Modern-farmhouse bedside lighting in a master bedroom?
Woodstock Vintage Lumber
Looking to bring a little life into your otherwise buttoned-up space, via some rustic wood touches? Nashville’s Woodstock Vintage Lumber can probably help — they do custom barn doors, rough-hewn and box beams and tons of other projects. Their showroom is on the south side of Nashville in Wedgewood-Houston, so you can head over, get some inspiration and make some plans.
Good Wood Nashville
Another Nashville company that works with reclaimed wood, Good Wood in East Nashville recently added the modern-farmhouse touchtone to their offerings: shiplap. They’re certainly not the only folks who can install a shiplap feature wall for you in Nashville, but they’ll deliver a higher quality than most. While a lot of the newly installed shiplap you’ll see is MDF, Good Wood sticks to their name, and uses real poplar select.
D. Luxe Home
Since blending vintage pieces with your clean and modern finishes is key here, you need a good outlet for vintage finds. Well worth a visit: D.Luxe Home, an “Industrial, Glam & Kinda Kooky Home Store” in Marathon Village. They tend to stock interesting vintage finds and new pieces with lived-in looks (reclaimed wood, chippy painted pieces). They can be helpful in particular if you’re looking for finishing touches — antique bottles and vases and the other little things that make bookshelves and mantels less boring.
Bates Nursery & Garden Center
It’s tough to nail a farmhouse look without having a lot of growing things around. For your plantlife, skip the big box and head to a local nursery — you’ll get more lively new friends and, generally, more help picking and learning to care for them. Among Nashville’s better nurseries: Bates Nursery & Garden Center in the Whites Creek area, which stocks a full forest’s worth of trees, flowers and other growing things. Give the staff a sense of what the light’s like in your space, and the looks you like, and they’ll point you in the right direction.
Going Underground
This technically isn’t local. But scroll down in the Apartment Therapy post — see that art in the Country Living living room? They think “punchy graphic art” mixed with rustic textures makes a big statement, and this Giclee print from Going Underground on Etsy has a very similar voice, just with a Nashville accent.
OAK Nashville
You’ll probably want to pair that graphic art with a rug that has natural texture — jute, hemp maybe even cowhide. West Nashville shop OAK Nashville finds good options of that sort, especially if you’re leaning vintage. If they don’t already have what you want, they can probably find it, too.
