Where to watch the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse in Nashville.
We’ve had a lot of special moments in Nashville already this year, from the Nashville Predators’ Stanley Cup run to what’s turning out to be a record-setting summer for tourism, with some 120,000 people downtown just this past Sunday night.
But there’s something bigger on the horizon, very literally.
On August 21, we’ll have a total solar eclipse crossing North America for the first time in almost 100 years. And the biggest city that’s directly in the eclipse’s path: Nashville.
The last time a total solar eclipse was visible from Nashville was even longer ago — July 29, 1478. So as a Nashvillian, this isn’t just a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but a once-in-several-lifetimes thing.
All eclipses are cool, but this is much more intense, and much more obvious. You could miss a partial eclipse, but not what’s happening August 21 — while the full eclipse is going down, day will turn to night, albeit briefly, and you’ll catch a breathtaking celestial sight: the sun being totally blocked out by the moon. Stars will emerge in the middle of the day. The temperature will noticeably drop.
The totality is expected to happen at 1:27 p.m. that day, and Nashville, naturally, isn’t letting this remarkable moment in time go uncelebrated.

Nashville eclipse viewing parties are scheduled at all kinds of places, all across town.
A few of our favorites:
— Acme Feed & Seed downtown is throwing a party on their rooftop, which, as we mentioned recently, offers one of the best city views in Nashville. So this is bound to be beautiful.
— The Adventure Science Center is hosting a free outdoor festival with games, contests, food trucks and demonstrations, so along with watching the eclipse and enjoying yourself, you can learn a little about space/astronomy.
— The General Jackson Showboat will have a run on the river that coincides with the eclipse — watching it happen from the water should be extra pretty.
— Cheekwood in Belle Meade is going to host an eclipse viewing party with half-price admission on August 21, so you can enjoy a beautiful celestial event in one of Nashville’s most beautiful places, and save a little cash for souvenirs.
The Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp has a thorough rundown of public eclipse viewing locations and parties in Nashville, including a full list of city and state parks that are right in the path of the totality.
They also have pointers for how to watch an eclipse safely, which is pretty key, too.
Do you already have plans sorted for your eclipse viewing? Our team is still deciding, though we might try to convince one of our clients in Sylvan Summit to host a party, since that neighborhood has bar-none the coolest views in Nashville.
